Prodigy Education
Rationale
What is Prodigy Education?
Why Prodigy Education in my classroom? As a primary school teacher, whose majority of experience has now been hybrid-online learning, technology has gone from a nicety to a necessity. Whilst there are numerous creative and interactive options for language arts development, mathematics is lacking. As the curriculum moves forward, so do our teaching practices. We know participation, experiential learning and out-of-box thinking is the best way to create strong learner for all subjects, yet Mathematics has never been revolutionized. Math is still taught paper-to-pencil, rote memory with no engagement for student buy-in. Imagine this now, in an online environment. Where there is no classroom environment to keep you engaged, just independent work at primary age.
That's how I saw my students.
I adapted. I implemented a game-based learning mentality and Prodigy fit the bill. An interactive, skill adaptable source that students loved and would play for hours more. Prodigy allows me as the teacher, to view what my students are doing, the amount of time they are on, skills they have mastered or are mastering and more.
There are other online math programs, a well-known one is IXL. Whilst I love IXL, I find Prodigy and their more character-based development to hold my primary audience’s attention for longer. IXL still follows a more dry version of game-based learning.
Why Prodigy Education as a venture?
Prodigy Education fits the new form of learning media that is dominating the classroom and home learning eco-sphere. A free interactive, Game-Based Learning app and website dedicated to improving numeracy skills in primary and early intermediate students. Students aged 6-12 are quick learners when engaged, and this game allowed for multiple flash-style games that react to student progress, increasing difficulty when necessary. A growing Canadian-based company with a stronghold in districts and homes, Prodigy Education is quickly on its way to being a household name in Numeracy development. Reflection:
Analyzing Prodigy Game has given me great context to their product as well as those who created it. On a personal note, the graduates being from a university close to my heart. I reflect on Prodigy and I see the growth potential, and the current use inspires my professional practice. Whilst Prodigy Education is a quickly growing product, and company, there is still limited information to create a deeper analysis. With the information given I would invest in this product as the market growth and revenue clearly indicate a strong future. I would like to re-evaluate this product in 2, 5, 10 years to see the growth and lasting effect it had. Understaning the growth, and market of Math games supports me as I look into Assignment 3.
